An Idiot’s Guide to Energy: Introduction
Should be interesting considering a class I’m taking this semester called: “Energy and Climate: History, Science, Techology, and Policy in the US 1776-2076” We shall see what the differences I see are…This idea started out as a rant about a fallacy a great book written by a very intelligent man who got many of his facts incorrect about energy consumption. This post became long enough that I decided to merely change the direction and turn it into a multi-part series on what energy is, where it comes from, the difference between what runs one’s car and what powers one’s home, why we can’t just install solar panels and wind turbines on everything, and what all this carbon emissions talk boils down to.
This is made to be bare bones, non-technical, and entirely accessible. I think it’s very worth knowing, but I’m also an energy analyst, so I’m a bit biased. Most Americans don’t know what happens when they turn a key or flip a switch, so here’s my part to improving the world. I’m going to keep each section short and simple so that they are manageable for the complete beginner to read.
The first chapter will be entitled Planes, Trains, and Automobiles: Petroleum and Synthetic Fuels. Stay tuned.
